Using the Eckle’s Place Array Board in Classroom Rotations
The Eckle’s Place Array Board is designed to be flexible enough for small-group teaching, independent practice and maths rotations without needing a different resource for every concept. One board, a set of marbles and a clear learning intention can cover far more ground than yet another worksheet quietly waiting to be forgotten in a tray.
Rotation ideas
1. Build the Number
Give students a target number and ask them to represent it on the board using marbles. Students can then explain different ways they arranged the same quantity.
2. Arrays and Multiplication
Students create arrays to represent multiplication facts, then record the matching number sentence. For example, 4 rows of 6 becomes 4 × 6 = 24.
3. Division and Sharing
Provide a total and ask students to arrange the marbles into equal groups or rows. This helps make the relationship between multiplication and division visible.
4. Number Patterns
Students build skip-counting patterns, doubles, square numbers or repeated groups and discuss what they notice.
5. Teacher-Led Strategy Group
Use the board at the teacher table to model a concept before students move into independent or paired practice. Because the representation is physical, teachers can quickly see how students are thinking and where misconceptions begin.
Easy to differentiate
The same board can be used at different levels simply by changing the task.
A younger student might represent numbers to 20, while another student explores multiplication facts, factors, fractions or equivalence using the full 10 × 10 grid.
That makes the Array Board particularly useful in mixed-ability rotations where the resource stays the same but the cognitive demand changes.
Most importantly, students are not just answering a question. They are building the mathematics, moving it around and explaining what they see.
