Why Hands-On Learning Matters

Primary teachers see it constantly: some concepts simply make more sense when students can touch, move, build and talk about them.

That matters even more in classrooms where screen use is increasingly common. Australian health guidelines recommend no more than two hours of sedentary recreational screen time per day for children aged 5–17, excluding educational use, yet only a minority of Australian primary-aged children meet those recommendations. This is not an argument against technology. It is an argument for balance.

Making learning visible

In mathematics, manipulatives can help students connect abstract symbols with concrete meaning.

A meta-analysis involving more than 7,000 learners across 55 studies found positive effects from using concrete manipulatives in mathematics compared with instruction relying only on abstract symbols. Read the research summary.

The Education Endowment Foundation likewise recommends purposeful use of manipulatives and representations, particularly when teachers explicitly connect the physical model to the mathematical idea. Read the EEF guidance.

The same applies to literacy.

The Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 places strong emphasis on phonic and word knowledge in the early years. Students blend, segment, decode and recognise spelling patterns. Explore the Australian Curriculum English guidance.

Physically building words, rearranging sounds or constructing sentences allows teachers to see student thinking as it happens.

More than just the resource

Hands-on learning is not about putting objects on a table and hoping educational magic occurs. The value comes from the discussion, questioning and reasoning around the activity.

Physical games naturally generate useful classroom talk:

“Why did you choose that?”

“Can you make it another way?”

“What happens if we change this?”

These interactions help students articulate their thinking while giving teachers immediate insight into understanding and misconceptions.

Digital tools absolutely have a place in modern classrooms. So do cards, counters, dice, magnetic pieces, pencils and manipulatives.

The goal is simply to choose the tool that best supports the learning.
